This Hull KR Rugby League Shirt is inspired by Roger Millward’s contribution to the Robins Challenge Cup success against Hull FC at Wembley in 1980.

An Introduction to Hull KR Rugby League Shirt and it’s inspiration.

The 1980 Challenge Cup was the first Hull Cup final derby. It had supporters from the East and West of the city making the trip to London. Hull Kingston Rovers defeated Hull 10-5 at Wembley before a crowd of 95,000. The game made national headline with the BBC Coverage  and big local news in the Hull Daily Mail.

Hull Kingston Rovers opened the scoring with a well-worked move. And Brian Lockwood’s delayed pass opened up a gap in the Hull FC defence for winger Steve Hubbard to score a memorable try. Although Hubbard missed the conversion he did kick a penalty in front of the posts following aggressive tactics by Hull FC.

Immediately after Roger Millward released Phil Lowe on a storming run. Seconds after Millward released the ball, Ron Wileman of Hull FC hit Millward and Hull FC were penalised. Further, Hubbard kicked the goal and Rovers led by a 7-0.

Hull FC’s Tim Wilby scored a try from close-range to bring Hull closer at 7-3. Hull KR Captain Roger Millward dropped a goal so at half-time it was Hull KR 8 v Hull FC 3.

Additionally, in the second half, Sammy Lloyd kicked a penalty for Hull FC. With only five minutes left, Hull FC faced penalisation and Steve Hubbard kicked the goal to make the final score to 10-5 for a Hull KR victory.

Hull K.R.’s Brian Lockwood received the Lance Todd Trophy award. But it will always be the great Roger Millward remembered for playing through the full 80 minutes with a broken jaw and his celebrations at the end of the game. People can view the full match report at Richard de la Rivière.

Roger Millward enjoyed a playing career which spanned from 1964-1980. In addition, he made his name with his hometown club Castleford. A move the Hull KR in 1966 resulted in him becoming one of Hull KR Rugby League all-time greats. As well as, he played for Great Britain Rugby League Lions in the 1970 Ashes-winning team. To celebrate this achievement Ellis Rugby produced a Great Britain Rugby League Lions 1970 Rugby Shirt and a Great Britain Rugby League Lions 1970 Rugby Polo Shirt. In addition, Ellis Rugby produced this promotional  YouTube Video.

He also played for Cronulla Sharksin the 1976 Season in the Australian Rugby League competition and Ellis Rugby produced a Cronulla Polo Shirt. Furthermore, Roger Millward became a part of the Rugby League Hall of Fame in 2000.
